In the scene used below we have a cloud formation. I am going to use an opacity mask on it.
Select the cloud and see it in Transparency.
Then click on the arrow and select Make Opacity Mask.
Click on the black square.
Select a gradient.
Make a rectangle around the cloud. The gradient will be automatically applied.
Now we have an interesting cloud. Try to apply different gradients to the rectangle.
